Shirley Ann Hammons Smith, age 86, of Waynesburg, Kentucky, passed away peacefully Monday, April 6, 2026, at Stanford Crossing in Stanford, Kentucky. Born Tuesday, October 24, 1939, in Mount Vernon, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Willard & Lela Margaret Hysinger Hammons. Shirley previously taught business law in colleges and prisons and retired from the Kentucky State Retirement Board and Bluegrass MR/DD. Shirley served on the Foster Care Review Board. She was a member of DAR in Rockcastle County, Kentucky and Order of the Eastern Star. Shirley loved ancestry and story telling, traveling, crocheting, and writing music and poems, in her spare time. She previously attended the Lincoln County Senior Citizens Center and the Pulaski County Alzheimer's/Dementia Day Care Center. Shirley will be remembered for her love for others and always willing to do anything she could for them.
Shirley leaves behind two daughters, Sherry Lynnell Smith Moore (Brad) of Burnside, Kentucky, and Cynthia Darlene Smith Hildebrandt (Jeff) of Waynesburg; 10 grandchildren, Derek Gastineau (Lauralee) of Stanford, Danny Gastineau (Bonnie Lou) of Burnside, Marco Smith of Germany, TJ Fields (Karlie) of Cookeville, Tennessee, MeShaila Fields (Patrick Callahan) of Lexington, Kentucky, Chasity Moore of Georgetown, Kentucky, Bridgette Smith (Chris) of Georgetown, Brooke Hildebrandt (Gabby) of Perryville, Kentucky, Alex Hildebrandt (Kamryn) of London, Kentucky, and Corey Hildebrandt of Perryville; 12 great-grandchildren, Hannah Gastineau Watts (Austin), Mason Gastineau (Madelynn), Jon Gastineau, Kevin Harris, Emmett Fields, Izzy Penney, Bri Penney, Samantha Smith Randolph (Megan), Shelby Smith, Adley Ryan, Ella Hildebrandt, and Lena Hildebrandt; one great-great granddaughter, Amberlee Yocum; one niece, Susan Hammons Camden (Ricky) of Parksville, Kentucky; one nephew, William Hammons (Shirley) of Greensburg, Kentucky; two great-nieces, Melissa Devine of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and Carissa Ingram of Mount Vernon; best friend, Bonnie Caldwell of Stanford; and numerous other extended family members and friends who mourn her passing.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by two sons, Henry C. “Hank” Smith II and Edward Ray “Eddie” Carpenter; one daughter, Marlena Gail Gastineau; one grandson, Bo Upton; one brother, Billy Hammons; three best friends, Lavenia Ham, Bessie Hasty, and Patricia Peery.
A Public Visitation will be held 11AM-1PM Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Barnett, Demrow & Friend Funeral Home.
A Public Funeral Service will be held 1PM Saturday, at the funeral home. Bro. David Gambrel will officiate the service. The Funeral Service will be livestreamed on Shirley’s memorial page of the funeral home’s website.
Burial will follow in Double Springs Cemetery. TJ Fields, Alex Hildebrandt, Derek Gastineau, Jeff Hildebrandt, Brad Moore, and Patrick Callahan will serve as Active Pallbearers. Corey Hildebrandt, Kevin Harris, Emmett Fields, Marco Smith, Danny Gastineau, Jon Gastineau and Mason Gastineau will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
