Melodi Frances Lay Dahl passed away in Knoxville, Tennessee on January 16, 2022, after a 16-month fight against cancer. Like everything else she faced in her life, she confronted this with fearless determination and confidence. Melodi always put herself second to others; even throughout her treatment, she was always more concerned about her loved ones than she was about herself.
Melodi was born on May 14, 1964, in Milford, Ohio, but moved with her family at a very young age to Arizona. Later in life she moved to Broughtontown, Kentucky to be closer to the family, and would spend her final four years in Knoxville.
Melodi graduated from Scottsdale High School, and was active in cheerleading, and enjoyed ice skating when she was younger. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing, and Nurse Practioner graduate degree both from Arizona State University. Over her career, she worked in emergency care, managed a cardiology clinic, was an airplane and helicopter flight nurse (her favorite job), and most recently worked in pain management. Melodi worked her entire life, and prided herself on being an excellent nurse, and truly had a compassionate desire to help others in need. But Melodi’s greatest passion was her love for all animals, she had many furry friends over the course of her life. Her cat Max and dog Pete will miss her.
Melodi liked relaxing and playing with her animals, spending time with family and friends, exploring new places, being vegetarian, movies, her faith, current events, working on her home, excellent morning coffee, a great glass of red wine, and a quiet evening by the fire.
Melodi is preceded in death by her beloved father, Willis “Bill” Jack Lay (“Pop”), 1930-2021. She survived by her loving mother, Hartsell Green Lay (“Gram”) of Broughtontown; beloved son, Brandon Dahl of Knoxville; brothers, Jerry Lay (Norma) and Jeffrey Douglas Lay (Dixie) both of Broughtontown; nephew, Travis Lay; niece, Lexi Lay; step-nieces, Leah Greasly and Jennifer Carmicle; very favorite cousins, Tim Estes and Mark Thacker; and Kyle, who was the love of her life.
Public services for Melodi will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Friendship Baptist Church in Broughtontown. The visitation will be held 11-1PM at the church. The public funeral service will be Saturday at 1:00PM with Bro. Kerry Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family asks that in honor of Melodi’s love for animals, donations be made to the Humane Society of Tennessee https://humanesocietytennessee.networkforgood.com/projects/15159-donate.
